KUCHING: Young Sarawak sprinter Ambrose Jilom who failed to make it into the final of the 100m at the MAAU meet over the weekend, blazed the track to come in third with a 10.91s time in the SUTMA (Sukan Institute Pendidikan Malaysia) in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
Sarawak AAA secretary Datuk Tham Siew Kai, who related the good news said although he did not win Jilom's time was promising and an improvement over his semi-final run in the MAAU meet when he clocked 11.01s.
Ambrose came from behind Kannan Subramaniam who did a 10.83 to emerge first followed by Mohd Azhar Mohd Ismail in 10.87s.
"The 10.91s was his best time of the year and coming from the 11.01s run a few days ago, it was quite good as he showed he can improve," said Tham.
Tham said Ambrose was called up by the Education Department to participate in the university meet participated by universities, teachers colleges and the schools sports councils organised by the Education Ministry.
He was representing the MSSM team as he was the champion in the last MSSM meet with a time of 10.89s.
Another Sarawakian, Mohd Jiromi Reduan who made the SUTMA meet his regular outings did not take part this year as he is overaged.
He said after this meet, it will be back to training for the Miri schoolboy who studied in SMK Riam as there is no other meet for the year.
Meanwhile, Sarawak's javelin ace Peter Agan Lugun who had been selected to participate in the Asian Track and Field in Guangzhou, China next month met a snag as he lost his passport and the MAAU had directed him to apply for another one in Kuala Lumpur to ensure that he takes part in the Asian meet.
Apart from Peter Agan, who is in the SEA Games training squad, other athletes from the State who are SEA Games-bound are 400m runner Norrohida Baidawi and javelin thrower Sruraini Sekembar who had switched to the Armed Forces team recently together with Mohd Reduan.
