Laos SEA Games: MAAU List Out Strong, Quality Athletes


KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) have lined up its strong field of athletes to capture medals at the 25th Laos SEA Games in Vientiene in December.

Forty-three athletes, including 22 women, will form the squad to aim for seven gold medals out of 55 in contention, in the track and field events which will be held at National Stadium from Dec 9-12.

In the men's category, the athletics governing body have placed high medal expectations from middle and long distance runner Vadivellan Mahendran who will race in three events.

The events are the 800m, 5,000m, and 1,500m.

Two others listed as medal contributors are Mohd Robani Hassan (110m Hurdles) and Jen chan Guo (Long Jump).

The list also outlines other athletes -- Mathialagan Subramaniam (800m), Lo Choon Sieng (20km Walk), Teoh Boon Lim (20km Walk), Lee Hup Wei (high jump), Mohd Hafizuddin Sahadan (pole vault), Chan Woo Yew (marathon), Mohd Jironi Riduan (1500m), Rayzam Shah Wan Sofiah (110m hurdles), Mohd Hasrolnizam Yaakod (discus throw), Adi Alifuddin Hussin (shot-putt), relay teams of 4x100m and 4x400m.

In the women's category, the medal potential comes from Norrohida Baidawi (400m), Nor Hazwanie Norizan (400m), Ganti Manthi Kumarasamy (800m), Yap Jeng Tzan (dicus throw), Norjannaj Hafiszah Jamaludin (100m), Nurul Sarah Abdul Kadir (100m), and the relay teams of 4x100m and 4x400m.

The other athletes who will also compete are Noraseela Mohd Khalid (400m hurdles, 400m), Roslinda Samsu (pole vault), Tan Song Hwa (hammer throw), Yuan Yu Fang (20km walk), Noor Amira Mohamad Nafiah (triple jump), Siti Nurulain Abdul Rahim (shot putt), Asrenny Asik (shot putt) and Syuraini Sekembar (javelin).

MAAU deputy president Karim Ibrahim told Bernama that they only shortlisted athletes who had the right qualities to excel in the games.

"We don't want any 'passenger' in this contingent as we don't want to waste tax payers' money. We want athletes who have the right qualities such as fighting spirit, willing to walk the extra mile, highly-determined and a sense of urgency to win their respective races," he said.
